Xero recently announced an expanded partnership with Gusto, giving Xero’s online payroll service reach into all 50 states.
The partnership promises a better online payroll experience for Xero users by building a deeper technical integration and a simplified user experience. As part of the partnership, Gusto will replace the current Xero online payroll solution and will become Xero’s core payroll service provider.
If you don’t already use Gusto, below are some features you can expect from their payroll service. As an added bonus, Gusto not only provides online payroll but also offers health, dental and other benefits as well as human resources tools and advice, making it easy to manage many of your administrative “back office” tasks from one simple integration.

What If I Use Xero’s Current Payroll Solution?
Xero will be working with its current online payroll customers to ensure a smooth transition to the Gusto payroll integration. There will be a wind-down period lasting until Dec. 31st, 2018 where the current online payroll customers can continue to use the existing platform until they transition to Gusto (or another provider of their choice). Things to remember during the transition period:
- If you continue using your account through December 2018, Xero will handle all of your 2018 payroll taxes as usual.
- If you’d like to make the switch prior to December 2018, Gusto will help you transition and handle all of the payroll tax filings at no additional costs. Users in this camp should wait for an email with further instructions on how to take advantage of this promotion.
- There will be a migration tool available before the final transition is scheduled to go-live. Xero payroll users can expect the transition to be finalized by the beginning of 2019.
What About the Cost?
Xero payroll customers will be receiving an email with additional information as the migration process continues. At that time, full pricing details and special promotions will be made available exclusively for Xero customers. Xero promises to give current online payroll customers sufficient time to review pricing and options so they can make decisions regarding their online payroll decision before year end.
